THE ASK

Utilize research from peer-reviewed academic sources to create a thesis and supporting argument on any topic of choice. Conduct source analyses to verify the credibility of information and abstract ideas.

WHY THIS TOPIC?

Throughout my life, I have always been interested in the intersection of women and human right’s issues. My focus is international, studying how women globally are affected in different cultures and societies and how many of these struggles parallel each other. Picking this topic was a way for me to examine how media affects human behavior, and thus affects the wellbeing of women in the U.S.

PROCESS

Watched Netflix documentary with firsthand interviews of women working in the industry and their positive/negative experiences.

Sourced numerous studies examining rates of sexual violence among women where offenders had consumed violent pornography.

Deterred confirmation bias by examining studies and sources where pornography use could potentially have positive, educational effects .

FINDINGS

  1. Pornography is an active factor, rather than distinct cause, of sexual violence

  2. Violent scenarios from porn influence behaviors

  3. Americans lack modern sexual ideology

  4. Pornography enforces male dominance

  5. More comprehensive research is necessary

KEY TAKEWAYS

I practiced effective, professional writing skills on a taboo topic. By examining a multitude of sources, I was able to look beyond my own biases to conclude a thesis based on facts, studies, and qualitative data. This essay prepared me for my current role at Fashion Snoops where I use sensitivity and thoughtfulness to succinctly craft copy centered around DEI issues.
